Fun end of year activity

So this activity is not really English related, but I still bet your kids would LOVE to do it on one of the last hot days of school before summer! Making ice cream out of coffee creamer! All you need is: Cup with lid Individual coffe creamer Salt Ice Water  Straw spoons All you have to do is: Fill the cup about halfway with ice Put in a dash of salt Put in a splash of water Put the lid on (I put tape over the straw hole) Shake, Shake, Shake for four minutes (Seriously, keep shaking) After the four minutes are up, take the lid off of your coffee creamer and if you shook it enough you should have a small taste of ice cream! How much would any kid love that? Heck, it tickled me and I am pretty old! Click on the images below to see the kind I purchased on Amazon

Mystery Candy inference lesson

I was browsing the Easter clearance section the other day when I ran across these guys:     I decided that it would make a fun inference activity for my kids. I plan to give each group one peep and have them write a description of their peep that should include: Smell Touch Sound  Sight Before the kids are allowed to split their peep they need to make an inference about what the flavor of the peep will be and back it up with evidence from their descriptive paragraph. They will then be allowed to taste their peep and will write a descriptive paragraph based on the taste. I will then ask the kids why would any company manufacture mystery candy and why would anyone want to buy mystery candy? I am hoping to get answers such as: Fun surprise, didn't want to give away too much information up front, suspense, etc... I will then remind students that authors like to do the same things for their readers. They want to make their readers think and read BETWEEN the lines instead of gi...

Survivor Symbolism

So I have been watching old episodes of "Survivor" lately and it dawned on me that it would be a good way to do a quick review of symbolism along with a little activity.  At the start of every single tribal council the host, Jeff Probst, says, "Fire represents life on the island." I plan to ask my students why they think "Survivor" chose fire to symbolize life and how it symbolizes life.  I found a supercut of all the times that JP said, "Fire represents life" and plan to show part of it to my kids (Or all of them if I feel like really hitting the point home). I will then discuss with them the fact that at the end of each tribal council after someone is voted off the island they snuff out their torch. I will ask students what the symbolism of this is, why they snuff out the torch, and repeat the fire represents life phrase.  Here is a supercut of "The tribe has spoken"  As a quick little review activity I will ask students to come up wi...
